Big Woods Beef is part of the Grote family farm operation that has been on the same land in southern Minnesota since 1856. We offer individual cuts of meat as well as quarters and halves. We strive to provide our customers with high-quality beef products.

Our Farm
Joe and Emily Grote are the 6th generation of Grotes to farm on the homestead since it was founded in 1856. Joe and Emily currently work with Joe’s parents, Fred and Barb, on the farm's day-to-day operation.
The daily operation now consists of nursery hogs, beef cattle, and cash crops of corn, soybeans, and alfalfa.
Our cash crops of corn, soybeans and alfalfa have been staples since the beginning. Most of our corn is sold locally for feed and ethanol. Our alfalfa is baled and sold locally for horses and calves or fed to our herd in the winter.
Our Cattle
We strive for the best quality of beef on the market. One way we believe we are constantly improving our cuts of beef is by selecting which heifers we keep in our breeding herd. We take a small DNA sample from all our heifer calves and send those results in to be compared with a database of all beef cattle in the country. The heifers are then compared and scored based on the DNA sample in a variety of categories. We then keep the heifers that score the best in the meat quality categories. This is a way that we can constantly improve our herd to provide the best possible cuts of beef to our customers.
